  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 cup boiling water, or enough to cover the bottom of the dish
  • Optional cream, for serving

    Wash and core the apples without cutting through the bottom. Arrange in a baking dish.

    Mix the sugar and cinnamon and divide it among the apple cavities.

    Pour enough boiling water into the dish to cover the bottom by about 1/4 inch.

    Bake for 35–45 minutes, basting every 10 minutes with the syrup in the dish, until tender but still holding shape.
