Ingredients
- 8 oz elbow macaroni
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter, plus more for the baking dish
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 1/2 tsp kosher salt
- 1 1/2 cups whole milk, warmed
- 2 cups grated sharp cheddar cheese
- 3/4 cup dry breadcrumbs
- 1 tbsp melted butter

Heat the oven to 375°F and butter a 2-quart baking dish.

Cook the macaroni in salted water until just tender. Drain well.

Melt 2 tablespoons butter in a saucepan. Whisk in the flour and salt, then slowly whisk in the warm milk. Cook until lightly thickened.

Layer half the macaroni and half the cheese in the dish. Repeat, then pour the white sauce evenly over the top.

Toss the breadcrumbs with 1 tablespoon melted butter and scatter over the casserole.

Bake for 25–30 minutes, until bubbling and browned on top. Rest 5 minutes before serving.
